ADHD and Gut Health – What Is The Link?

ADHD and gut health go hand in hand. Your gut does way more than just digesting your food. Gut is a house to millions of bacteria which interact with the brain in multiple ways, including the immune system and the nervous system.

When there is a disruption of the healthy balance of these bacteria, it often results in leaky gut syndrome and as a result many food particles that are not fully digested can get through the gut lining and come in contact with the immune system, triggering an immune response and creating inflammatory chemicals that can affect the child’s behavior and learning ability.

Leaky gut also leads to several food allergies, anxiety, and stress. Gut health is of the utmost importance when we talk about health status.

Resolving your gut health can hugely improve your symptoms related to ADHD. I often help children and adults replenish their gut flora using homeopathy. Homeopathic remedies not only restore the balance of microbiota but also helps to rebuild the gut lining. Restoring gut health is the first step towards the improvement of several symptoms related to ADHD.

Case study

Alisa, Age 7, came to see me for severe constipation, hyperactivity, crying spells at night time with restlessness, and tendency to recurrent tonsillitis.

Based on Alisa’s personality and her unique symptoms, she was prescribed Phosphorus. During her follow up appointment after 5 weeks, mom was very happy to inform me that there are no more crying spells at bedtime and her constipation was totally resolved. She was pooping every single day without any straining. She was amazed as her daughter’s behaviour and aggression was also improved.

Over the course of 6 months Alisa’s other symptoms resolved too. Her hyperactivity and restlessness was reduced and she was a lot more still and calm. There was only one episode of recurrent tonsillitis that too resolved quickly with a couple of doses of a homeopathic remedy.
